Effects of a Smart Learning Counting Program on Counting Competence and Academic Engagement Behaviors of Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a smart learning counting program on counting competence and academic engagement behaviors of elementary school students with autism spectrum disorders. Multiple probe design across subjects was used. The subjects of this study were three male elementary school students with autism spectrum disorders. The intervention program had three components: the baseline phase, the intervention phase, and the maintenance phase. The independent variable was a smart learning counting program and the dependent variables were counting competence and academic engagement behaviors. The results of the study were as follows. First, the smart learning counting program had positive effects on improving the counting competence of students with autism spectrum disorders. The improved counting competence of students with autism spectrum disorders was maintained three weeks after the discontinuation of the intervention. Second, the smart learning counting program had positive effects on improving the academic engagement behaviors of students with autism spectrum disorders. The improved academic engagement behaviors of students with autism spectrum disorders were maintained three weeks after the discontinuation of the intervention. The limitations of this study and suggestions for future studies and implications for special education settings were discussed.
